How I Got Started Writing Erotic Fiction

This is my first foray into writing erotica and I thought it would be nice to share my thoughts on writing  and offer readers a place to share their questions and thoughts about my work.

Here's a little background: I've been interested in pursuing a career authoring fiction for as long as I can remember. My parents, while not entirely disapproving, warned me at every opportunity that it can be nearly impossible to earn a living writing fiction. As a result I've always been too afraid to really put myself out there and pursue writing as a career.

Then, a year or so ago, I started hearing more about authors making hefty sums by writing hilarious (to me) dinosaur erotica and I started to wonder if I could do something like that. My idea was to corner a similarly unexplored niche and actually make a living with wrting.

The appeal lay in the unrealistic idea that I could write for a living full-time within a couple months. Fortunately, that's not all that's kept me going. I have at various times in my life tried writing comic short fiction, adventure/fantasy and literary fiction. For the most part, I never really knew what I was doing. But with erotica, I wouldn't have to overthink anything. I was free to develop my plots and characters as much or as little as I liked. As long as I included some good sex scenes, I couldn't mess up too badly. And that freedom kept me from being too self-conscious to push forward to the next story.

Having successfully incentivized writing and lowered to the stakes to the point where I was no longer my own worst critic, I was ready to get started.

My premise for erotica was, I thought, inspired: Founding Fathers erotica I titled "The Pounding Fathers," with stories about George Washington getting on with buxom lasses. That kind of bombed, partly because the number of people willing to pay to read about George Washington are pretty limited and partly because I told a few family members about my idea which made me way too self-conscious to continue writing under that pen name.

If you want to check it out you can find my profile here: Rosie Banks. Here's an excerpt from my favorite scene: "She saw Washington lying in a rapidly growing pool of his own blood. She almost fainted at the sight of it, but, knowing that doing so would perpetuate negative gender stereotypes, she marshaled her courage and knelt down to examine Washington's wounds."

Writing sex scenes with George Washington was fun. But after the limited success with founding fathers erotica, I thought I'd do something a little more mainstream, which is where I am now: billionaire with mild bdsm. the story is free here: Fired: Belonging to the Billionaire.

Please tell me what you think about anything to do with writing, not just erotica! Am I selling out by trying to write erotic

  1. Hi I read both books now. I really like them so far. I don't know what your up to with west giving Amber right got dominate Stephanie. I would love the whole story. Then I can leave review. The reason is that, I feel a little lost. So I feel I can't leave a good review.

    1. Hi Leona,

First of all, thanks so much for reading my stories! I'm really glad you've enjoyed them so far.

As for giving Amanda (Is that who you meant by Amber?) the right to Dominate Stephanie, I guess I did that because I wanted to give Amanda a more interesting role in the series.

So far she's just been a foil for the major characters to confide in/exist as contrast to. So I thought I could make her more engaging and relevant to the story if I gave her power over Stephanie.

Of course, Andre doing this isn't at all in keeping with a real, healthy BDSM relationship, but I hope it'll make for some good reading : )

      Thanks for writing,

      Vivian

ps If you have any other constructive criticisms I would love to hear them!
